A new surge of heat across Austria is set to prolong what has already been an exceptionally hot and dry summer. Forecasts from UBIMET show no signs of a lasting weather shift: temperatures will once again climb well above 30°C nationwide, thunderstorms will remain highly localized, and the urgently needed widespread rainfall continues to stay out of reach.
Persistent Heat, Patchy Storms
The week begins unsettled. On Monday, showers move through the mountain regions early in the day, with thunderstorm activity increasing across the Alps and the south by afternoon. Some storms may be intense, bringing heavy rain, hail and strong gusts. In contrast, much of the lowlands stays dry and sunny, with temperatures between 28 and 37°C, especially hot in the east.
On Tuesday, the weather split becomes even more pronounced. From the Innviertel to the northern Burgenland, conditions remain stable with a mix of sun and clouds. Across the mountains and the south, however, showers and locally severe thunderstorms redevelop. A northwesterly wind reduces humidity in the east, but temperatures still reach 27 to 34°C.
Midweek Sky Show: Eclipse and Perseids
Wednesday brings not only sunshine and isolated heat storms over the mountains, but also two celestial highlights: a partial solar eclipse at sunset and a clear view of the Perseids overnight. Weather conditions are ideal across large parts of northern and eastern Austria, with clear skies and dry air. Only the Alps and the south may see lingering clouds.
Daytime temperatures ease slightly to 26–33°C, and the night to Thursday is expected to be the coolest of the week. Even in cities, a light jacket is recommended for evening skywatchers.
Heat Intensifies Again
From Thursday onward, high‑summer weather returns in full force. Sunshine dominates, with only isolated thunderstorms along the main Alpine ridge. Temperatures rise again to 28–34°C.
By Friday and into the weekend, Austria faces another round of intense heat, with 35–37°C possible in the lowlands. On Sunday, the risk of severe thunderstorms increases from the west.
Still No Relief for Drought-Stricken East
Despite occasional strong thunderstorms, Austria’s long‑awaited rainfall breakthrough remains absent. Storms continue to hit only small areas, offering no meaningful relief for the widespread drought — especially in the east, where extreme forest‑fire danger persists.
Meteorologists warn that Austria is on track for one of the hottest and driest summers ever recorded. Only in the second half of August does a chance for more sustained, widespread rainfall begin to appear.
Until then, the outlook remains unchanged: plenty of sun, plenty of heat — and plenty of patience.
